New 36-Count Indictment Set to Be Filed Against Lawyer Michael Avenatti

LOS ANGELES – Attorney Michael Avenatti is set to be charged in a 36-count grand jury indictment, the U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles said Thursday.

The precise nature of the charges were not immediately clear. The office of U.S. Attorney Nick Hanna said it would release the document later Thursday morning.

Mr. Avenatti was charged last month with wire fraud and tax fraud by federal prosecutors in California.

The same day, Mr. Avenatti was arrested in Manhattan and charged with attempting to extort more than $20 million from Nike Inc. Prosecutors in Manhattan alleging he told lawyers for Nike that he and an unnamed co-conspirator would release damaging information about the company if Nike didn't pay them to conduct an "internal investigation."

Mr. Avenatti has denied wrongdoing in both matters.

Court papers filed last month by federal prosecutors in California allege that beginning around 2015, Mr. Avenatti's law firm and a coffee chain he purchased stopped paying payroll taxes, channeling millions of dollars withheld from employees to his personal bank accounts instead of turning over the money to the Internal Revenue Service.

The failure to make the IRS payments, they allege, led to millions of dollars in liens and penalties.

or when JD got asked about JPM getting a benefit from slavery. "ahhh…ahhhh-yea we said that…."

guess they regret putting that out in 2005 now don't they..

JPMorgan Chase & Co. admits link to slavery

WASHINGTON (NNPA) - A 2003 Slavery Era Disclosure Ordinance that requires companies doing business with the city of Chicago to disclose whether they had profited from slavery forced JPMorgan Chase & Co. to acknowledge that its roots are linked to the 19th century slave trade and it profited from the free labor of more than 13,000 Africans.

“Recently, JPMorgan Chase completed extensive research examining our company’s history for any links to slavery to meet a commitment to the city of Chicago. Today, we are reporting that this research found that, between 1831 and 1865, two of our predecessor banks—Citizens Bank and Canal Bank in Louisiana—accepted approximately 13,000 enslaved individuals as collateral on loans and took ownership of approximately 1,250 of them when the plantation owners defaulted on the loans,” the company wrote in statement.

Public records in Louisiana indicate that Citizens Bank and Canal Bank—which eventually became Bank One—merged with JPMorgan Chase in 2004. It provided credit to plantation owners and accepted mortgages from them. Records also indicate that both banks often initiated foreclosure on mortgages and took over the property, which usually included enslaved Blacks.
