U.S. Customs and Border Protection said it will send officers at airports and the northern border to the southwest border to respond to an influx of migrants.
The agency disclosed the details on the deployments after an article posted Thursday by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on delays moving through Customs at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport..
Hartsfield-Jackson general manager John Selden told the AJC earlier this week that the movement of Customs agents to the southern border “has reduced our staffing levels here at Hartsfield-Jackson. And we are advocating through our Congressional delegation to hopefully get more staff here to balance it out throughout the country.”
CBP’s top official in Atlanta declined to provide specific information about staffing levels.
But CBP said in a new statement that it “will send CBP officers from airports and northern border locations on temporary assignments throughout the Southwest border to support the U.S. Border Patrol during the current border security and humanitarian crisis.”
Those officers will replace CBP officers assigned to support Border Patrol along the Southwest border, according to the agency.
