Walmart to Amazon's Jeff Bezos: "How about paying your taxes?
A top Walmart executive shot back at Jeff Bezos, tweeting, "How about paying your taxes?"
The tweet was in response to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos challenging other retailers to match or even top the ecommerce giant's $15 an hour minimum wage.
The Walmart executive also said the "vast majority" of warehouse workers earn $15 an hour as well as bonuses, a criticism of Amazon's decision to take away bonuses after boosting its pay to $15 an hour.
Amazon remains under fire for what critics say are harsh working conditions in the company's warehouses.
Walmart is punching back after Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos on Thursday challenged other retailers to match or exceed the ecommerce giant's minimum wage for workers, which it moved to hike last fall to $15 an hour.
In his annual shareholder letter, Bezos called out his "top retail competitors (you know who you are!) to match our employee benefits and our $15 minimum wage." He added, "Better yet, go to $16 and throw the gauntlet back at us. It's a kind of competition that will benefit everyone."
In response, Walmart executive vice president of corporate affairs Dan Bartlett tweeted, "Hey retail competitors out there (you know who you are ) how about paying your taxes?" He included a news article about Amazon's zero tax liability in 2018 on $11.2 billion in profit.
