Sarah Sanders: Congress not 'smart enough' to look through Trump's taxes

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Sunday that she doesn't think members of Congress are "smart enough" to look through President Trump's tax returns.

"Frankly I don’t think Congress — particularly not this group of congressmen and women — are smart enough to look through the thousands of pages that I would assume that President Trump’s taxes will be," she said on "Fox News Sunday."

"My guess is that most of them don’t do their own taxes and I certainly don’t trust them to look through the decades of success that the president has and determine anything," Sanders continued.

Las Cruces, N.M. pleads for help amid migrant dropoffs: 'This is going to be an ongoing event'

Border Patrol agents dropped off asylum-seeking migrants in New Mexico’s second most populous city for the second day in a row Saturday, prompting Las Cruces city officials to appeal for donations of food and personal hygiene items and a state medical program to seek volunteers to provide health assessments of migrants.

The migrants were being temporarily housed at a homeless shelter in Las Cruces, a city recreation center and a campus of social service agencies, city officials said in a statement.

The statement said 83 migrants arrived Saturday, following about 95 who were dropped off by the Border Patrol on Friday at the Gospel Rescue Mission homeless shelter and the Community of Hope campus.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reported Las Cruces churches for months have been providing temporary shelter to migrants released from Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention but that Friday was the first time that the Border Patrol vans dropped off migrants at the homeless shelter.

City spokesman Udell Vigil said Saturday that migrants could be arriving “for the next several days.”

Las Cruces is not a sanctuary city that rebuffs federal officials carrying out deportation orders.

Lindsey Graham to introduce immigration package, toughen asylum standards

Sen. Lindsey Graham said Sunday he will be introducing a proposal to change U.S. asylum laws, saying the only way to stop the crisis at the southern border is to toughen up asylum standards.

The South Carolina Republican said a wall and military personnel at the border helps control the flow of migrants coming from Central American countries, but won’t completely stop the problem.

“We have to change these laws so people stop coming,” Mr. Graham told Fox News during an appearance on “Sunday Morning Futures.”

“Doing what we are doing is not working…the crisis has to come to an end,” he added.

The chairman of the Judiciary Committee said lawmakers will mark up a bill once they return from recess later this month.

He wants to change the time officials can detain a minor child to more than 20 days, saying the law in place now requires them to be released after 20 days of detainment, causing an increase in family units to be sent out into communities.

Mr. Graham also said the law currently allows the U.S. to only return minor children to Mexico or Canada instead of the central America country they came from, so he wants to alter the law to allow the unaccompanied minors to be returned to Central America.

The senator said those in central America are aware of these quirks and have been exploiting them.

Democratic presidential hopeful Kamala Harris releases taxes

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has released 15 years of tax returns, including her returns for 2018, and the California senator reports that she and her husband had a federal tax bill of about $700,000 on an adjusted gross joint income of about $1.9 million last year.

The documents released Sunday provide the fullest picture of her finances as she pursues a White House bid.

Harris reported an income of about $157,000 in 2018 from her job as a senator, as well as about $320,000 in net income as a writer; a book she wrote was published earlier this year. Her husband, Doug Emhoff, earned about $1.5 million working as an attorney.

Harris and her husband reporting giving a small portion of their income — often about 1% to 3% a year — to charitable causes. Harris reported no charitable contributions some years when she was California's attorney general.
