Merkel's father was Horst Kasner, born Horst Kaźmierczak in 1926, His father (Merkel's grandfather) Ludwig Kaźmierczak was a policeman born out of wedlock in Posen, a part of the German empire that would later be returned to Poland. He (Ludwig) also served in the first world war in the German army. When his home town was returned to Poland he moved to Hamburg in 1930 and changed the family name to Kasner. So Horst (Merkel's father) Becomes a Kasner at 4 years old.
My guess is the name change is to better integrate with the Germans and conceal his polish heritage.
Changed his name when he moved and got a job in Poland.
