There is a worldwide epidemic of iodine deficiency. Also, unlike commercially-processed products, traditional salt contains more than just sodium chloride, there are other trace minerals in it. There are iodine receptors on every cell in the body, upping the intake will knock halogens off them.
Another worldwide deficiency epidemic is vitamin D. People are not getting enough sunshine and that lack is implicated in an enormous number of illnesses. Again, receptors all over the body requiring way more vitamin D to fill than people are getting. In both instances of vitamin D and iodine deficiency the bastards messed with supplementing both in the diet back in the first half of the last century, with only just enough to hide major symptoms, thyroid goiter as a result of iodine deficiency and rickets as a result of vitamin D deficiency.
