His strategy was bullish, first consolidating the efforts of a fractured array of Jewish groups and then using the WJC’s influence to campaign on behalf of Jews around the world.

In the 1980s this work involved several trips behind the Iron Curtain to the Soviet Union. Bronfman succeeded in getting authorities there to improve treatment of Jews, and allow freer emigration. He also steered the WJC in its pursuit of the Austrian President, Kurt Waldheim, who was accused of covering up his wartime Nazi links. The WJC also pursued compensation cases for countless Jewish families whose savings had been placed with Swiss banks before the war."
