The Nazi's were considered the Third Reich. Holy Roman Emperors of France like Charlemagne referred to their reign as reichs. The three largest Reich's in history are Charlemagne, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Adolf Hitler. Charlemagne's father Pepin the Short established Rome and the Bishop of Rome as the head of the Christian Church and also established the sovereignty of the Papal States.
