ArchitectureFag here…the word "cathedral" contains the root cathedra, which is Latin for chair, and also derives from the Greek word kathédra, or seat. A cathedra serves as the chair/seat or "throne" of a bishop. Attached Q crumbs may or may not be related.

 

Also, successful Gothic cathedral proportions (meaning it didn't collapse) were largely based on the Golden Ratio and the geometry of a pentagram.

 

Inb4 cathedrals are EVIL…because most modern and postmodern architecture is soulless garbage that was also built on the backs of slaves and inspires no one excepts demons kek.

Ironically enough, it was the novel that helped inspire the major renovations of the mid-1800s…the inside was falling apart at that point from both revolutions and the public didn't really give a damn. So much of what burned is not 800 years old. And actually, cathedral fires have never been uncommon. Notre Dame in Chartres has the craziest story.
