Try this scenario for the burning of Notre Dame.

Reason: The ongoing renovations on the 800 year-old structure showed the impossibility of renovating the wood that had rotted beyond all recovery, the incredible cost - to the government/citizens to gut the interior and try and replace all the damage.
Solution: Burn it, take the loss of what is flammable and take advantage to force belief change by combining different religions into one building to force acceptance.
Result: Day after, checks for many, many millions start pouring in, especially from the half-billion catholic-cultists who watched ND burn and foolishly believe their offerings are going to rebuild to the glory of the catholics…and who will discover their offerings are going to rebuild to the glory of the "one world, one currency, one religion" cultists whether they like it or not.
