True Navy Seals story: This morning on my daily dog walk through a large municipal sports park, a pair of men wearing Navy t-shirts were directing a dozen strong group through PT, including timed running around the 800 meter track. during one lap, I approached the two Navy men and inquired if they were Reserves, out here doing their periodic PT. I asked because I often see local Army and Marine Reserve units in the park. First of all, these two men were very cordial, polite, and quick to respond. No was the answer. This was part of the Navy Seals recruitment process.
'So these are recruits, heading to basic training first, then your Seal program?"
"If they can pass the physical test, yes."
"None of them have had military training before?"
"No."
None? You don't recruit from within the Navy ranks?"
"No. We don't have to."
"You mean hopefuls come to you, just wanting to be a Navy Seal, to be challenged, following in the footsteps of parents or family members who have been a Seal, drawn to the legacy from what they see in the news and entertainment media? That's how you find recruits?"
(smiling) "Yes, all the above."
That was impressive to hear. As impressive was talking with two men who look squarely into your eyes when talking, who track and answer questions easily and quickly. I walked away thinking of the challenges, hardship and danger those two men may have experienced during their service, and those hopefuls stepping forward, eager to join their ranks. I honestly walked away with tears in my eyes.
