It generally stems from a literalist interpretation of revelation by John Nelson Darby, whose literalist interpretation of the Book of Revelation is the origin of the entire "Left Behind" train of thought.

 

The prophecies in the Book of Revelation have literally never been perceived in a literal sense by either the Catholics or Protestants going back to when the Christian religion began to formalize and splinter. We've argued several different theories for centuries, but not literal interpretation.
