I forget the name of the Pistol rule, but it states that if you show a gun early in a movie and then show it again a second time in the movie, that it has to or will be used by the end for the climax.
It's in a drawer, then it's in a pocket, then it's used in the final scene. That's the most straight forward example. It preps the viewer with anticipation even though they may forget as it isn't relevant in various scenes.
