I’ve participated in a number of examinations before ROBY harvests. Not only are patients unable to respond in a meaningful way AT ALL, brainstem death is confirmed by removing the patient from the ventilator circuit. They do this for up to an hour and if the patient breaths on their own for an hour (lower brain function) they do not harvest. It is a rigorous process, and the harvesters are not allowed to even be in the room.
