It's exactly like a trial, and the public is the jury. Prosecution goes first, and the jury is thinking "this dude is guilty." Then the defense puts on its case. If the defense has a case, the jury ends up (justifiably and properly) hating the prosecutor for dragging an innocent person through the mud.
