Sounded to me like a bad mic line. A line with a short in it would enable somebody to wiggle the end of the cable near the XLR connector, causing it to become staticky, causing the gain to drop. There being only one mic oeing used on the lectern, the manipulation of the mic line would be very easy to do, and it would also affect all feeds
