Mueller report pages 271 - 280

This section largely deals with the events immediately prior and leading up to the termination of FBI director Comey by POTUS. It describes several meetings, with key players Boente, McGahn, Sessions, Rosenstein, Miller, & Comey.

Key Points:

  1. At first, President expresses confidence in Comey, and asks him to publicly state that the Russian Election interference investigation is not investigating the President.

  2. DOJ & FBI resist making that statement, and Comey refuses to comment on whether the President is being investigated in his May 3, 2017 testimony.

  3. POTUS asks intelligence agencies to put out that the Russia Link is false and largely they reply they cannot publicly comment on an ongoing investigation.

  4. POTUS tried to prevent Sessions' recusal, and urged him to unrecuse at various times. At one point he expresses anger in a meeting, blaming Sessions' for "leaving him on an island"

  5. POTUS becomes angered that the misdirection that the reporting of Russia Election interference investigation (falsely) indicates POTUS is under investigation. He comments several times this is hurting his ability to conduct business with foreign leaders, especially Russia.

  6. POTUS loses confidence in Comey after May 3, 2017 testimony, calls him a "showboater", "grandstander", begins discussing removing him with Miller & Kushner

  7. Sessions & Rosenstein support Comey's firing. Rosenstein writes memo to this effect, but claims his reasons differ from POTUS. POTUS is adamant this memo contain some mention to the reference that POTUS is not being investigated.

  8. POTUS uses Comey's termination letter to publicly announce that Comey personally stated that POTUS is not under investigation.

Anon's take: lots of misdirection and 3D chess by all key players.
