Two comments only because I don't see anyone else throwing this out there:
a) 12MB/s to Europe is incredibly fast. If they were able to get this with one TCP connection, that means the ping time was insanely low. Respect.
b) It is entirely possible to take any file system and write some relatively simple software to massage all of the file times to both make the 'copy speed' appear to be whatever you want. It is a simple change to make all times evenly divisible by 2 seconds (which would simulate a FAT file system.)
I'm NOT saying this happened - I don't think it did. However, it is possible to do.
I don't think whoever copied the DNC data was smart enough to do this. I think the bad guys in all of this are even less smart. In fact, I think the bad guys are just fucking retarded.
