Before welding existed, Bronze statues (and any other metal) would be cast in pieces using the lost wax method. Then those pieces would be fitted together and painstakingly hammered, chased, and finished to remove seams and obvious joints.

 

These heads likely are removed as a necessity for securing the inner armatures before transportation.

 

That's just an artfags input, it could also of course be a deliberate insult and mockery.
