he is 16 and a large dog so he has lived more than expected.

 

I don't want him to suffer so I can let him go.

 

but if he is still wagging his tail and eating and drinking, I just want him to be confortable and stop the cancer from advancing.

 

He could die any day now from something other than cancer just because he is so old.

 

I figure as long as a dog is alert, eating and drinking, the dog is not ready 'to go'.
