My take on AWS is that it represents a similar DS game plan as was used in FB and other socials, but specifically targeted on the commercial private sector.

Over the last handful of years, most companies have initiated transitions away from their own data centers to cloud solutions like AWS and Google. Maintaining a data center is very costly. The hardware costs are high. The staffing costs are high - and good resources are often hard to find. Many companies are dealing with "big data" - the growth of IoT (Internet of Things) has greatly accelerated the growth of big data. We are now deploying trillions of sensor WW that track everything people do. Everything is becoming networked. This data is very valuable. Data analytics (and AI) make this data even more valuable because it becomes an additional source of revenues for those companies providing services derived from this massive data collection. Data redundancy is also very important - and costly.

I suspect the [C]lowns, AWS, Google etc. are in this game because being on the inside (access to all of this data) translates to more POWER for them. Just as they tricked people into giving them their life history, they are tricking commercial businesses into giving them the keys to their kingdoms.
