Berkeley student gov: $93 TRILLION Green New Deal is 'ultimately financially wise'

 

Students at the University of California, Berkeley passed a resolution proclaiming their support of “sweeping climate reform” and the “intent" of New York Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Green New Deal, despite the plan's whopping $93 trillion price tag.

 

UC-Berkeley student government representatives passed the resolution with unanimous consent, affirming the Berkeley student body’s endorsement of “the intent and purpose of the Green New Deal to rapidly and significantly lower carbon emissions across the economy,” and calling on the U.S. federal government to adopt “an aggressive, economy-wide approach to lower U.S. carbon emissions by 55% by 2030 and to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, prioritizing the use of cost-efficient solutions.”

 

The text of the resolution listed several specific goals including the achievement of “net-zero greenhouse gas emissions through a fair and just transition for all communities and workers, including adequately addressing disproportionate pollution burdens placed on frontline communities” and the complete abolition of all California gas, oil, and coal production

Illinois student gov praises Texas State counterpart for attempt to ban conservative group

 

The University of Illinois student government sent a letter to the Texas State University student government in support of its resolution to ban Turning Point USA from its campus. The letter, shared on the Illinois student government Facebook page and signed by the group's president, vice president, and chief of staff, offers “thanks and support” for Texas State’s resolution.

 

The Texas State resolution calls for “the immediate removal and barring of Turning Point USA from Texas State University and suggest[s] protecting minority and marginalized populations from their negative campus influence.” Despite the student government's wishes, though, Texas State University told Campus Reform that a student organization can only be banned if it is under disciplinary sanctions.

 

“Turning Point USA has a long history of harassment on campuses around the country,” the University of Illinois student government letter reads. “Specifically at the University of Illinois, they have publicly distributed the personal information of undocumented students, repeatedly harassed both fellow students as well as professors, built a wall on our main quad as part of a racist statement against Hispanic and Latinx individuals, and most recently held a 'Hate Speech Is Free Speech' event the same day as the Christchurch Mosque shooting.”

 

Turning Point hosted their “Hate Speech Is Free Speech” event nearly a day before the mosque shooting, according to the event page on Turning Point USA at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Facebook.

 

The University of Illinois student government then "applaud[ed]" the Texas State University student government for "recognizing the threat that Turning Point USA's national actions pose."

Group Think -The Herd Mentality

 

“When everyone thinks alike, no one thinks very much.”

It has much truth to it. Critical thinking by its very nature questions ideas, opinions, and thoughts of yourself and others. It uses internal and external reflection.

 

There are three reasons it can be tough to escape this mentality. They are:

 

  1. The group think mentality is present every day from many sources. Radio, television, news papers, magazines and the Internet all reflect the current so called norm of thinking.

 

Too many times opinions are stated as fact by self-proclaimed experts. They cater to the most uninformed.

 

Unfortunately, many people don’t question what they hear, nor do they question the source of information before repeating it as gospel.

 

  1. The problems of the world are complex. For the non-critical thinker the world is a much simpler place to live.

 

  1. The drive for acceptance from others is a strong motivating factor. Thinking outside the group can be uncomfortable. However, it is necessary for the critical thinker.

 

Becoming a critical thinker takes conscious and constant diligence. A critical thinker continually asks the questions:

 

• Does this make sense?

• If so, why?

• If not, why not?

Sri Lanka bombing crackdown: 3 police killed in raid, several suspects in custody

 

Sri Lankan authorities have taken seven suspects into custody, who they believe may be connected with a series of bombings on Easter Sunday. Three police officers were reportedly killed in the raid.

 

The law enforcement deaths happened when they stormed a safehouse in Dematagoda, an area outside Colombo where the eighth explosion happened, a defense official said. A total of seven people were taken into custody in connection with the bombings.

 

The series of apparently coordinated explosions in Sri Lanka targeted Christian churches and luxury hotels just as believers gathered to celebrate Easter. At least two of the attacks on the churches are believed to have been committed by suicide bombers.

US imposes sanctions on Venezuelan central bank

 

The US Treasury imposed sanctions on the Central Bank of Venezuela on April 17, it announced.

 

The Treasury’s office of foreign assets control (Ofac) added the central bank and its director, Iliana Josefa Ruzza Terán, to the list of Venezuelan organisations and people under sanctions in January.

 

As a result, “all property and interests in property of this entity and individual (…) that are in the United States or in the possession or control of US persons are blocked and must be reported

Russian security chief: “1,500 ISIS terrorists have made their way to Europe from the Middle East”

 

Some 1,500 foreign terrorists, who took part in combat actions in the Middle East, are in Europe now, Director of Russia’s Federal Security Service Alexander Bortnikov told a conference on countering international terrorism.

“Some 1,500 out of 5,000 terrorists have arrived in the European Union from the Middle East, according to experts’ estimates. A significant number of them are gunmen, who have been sent by chieftains to Europe to continue terrorist attacks”, Bortnikov informed the conference attendees.

“Despite major losses in Syria and Iraq, the Islamic State and Al Qaeda terrorist groups, outlawed in Russia, and military groups affiliated with them still pose a serious threat.”

“They managed to operate their forces based on a network principle. Interconnected and autonomous cells spread from the Middle East to Europe, Central and South East Asia, and major militant groups go deep into the African continent, in particular to Libya”, Bortnikov noted.

 

According to the FSB chief, the situation in Afghanistan is of special focus. Illegal terrorist groups there are joined by terrorists from Syria, creating a threat for the Central Asian region’s states.
