The billionaire fashion tycoon behind the online clothing retailer Asos lost three of his four children in the Sri Lanka terrorist attacks, a spokesman has said.

Anders Holch Povlsen, 46, is Denmark’s wealthiest man with a net worth of $7.9bn (£6.1bn) according to Forbes, and is believed to be the largest landowner in Scotland after buying a string of historic estates.

He and his wife, Anne Storm Pedersen, hold an estimated 200,000 acres of the Highlands, and plan to rewild the landscape to preserve it for future generations, according to a Guardian report last month.

The bombings at churches and luxury hotels across Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday killed 290 people and wounded about 500. An investigator said on Monday that seven suicide bombers had taken part in the attacks.

Jesper Stubkier, the communications manager for Holch Povlsen’s wholesale clothing business, Bestseller, told the Press Association on Monday: “I can confirm that three children have been killed. We have no further comment and we ask that the family’s privacy is respected at this time.”

He declined to comment on the identity of the children or whether other members of the family had been visiting Sri Lanka. It has not been reported in which of the series of blasts they died.

A British woman and her two children are feared to be among eight victims from the UK killed in a wave of suicide bombings in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday that left nearly 300 people dead.

Anita Nicholson, a 42-year-old lawyer, and her son, Alex, 11, are thought to have died when a suicide bomber detonated his device in the breakfast queue at the Shangri-La hotel in Colombo, according to reports. Her husband Ben, 43, is believed to be the only survivor from the family as the couple’s daughter, Annabel, has not been accounted for, according to the Daily Telegraph.

They were reported to have been dining in the Shangri-La when the bomber struck. According to her LinkedIn profile, Anita Nicholson was based in Singapore as managing counsel at the mining and metals company Anglo American.

At least 30 foreigners are among the 290 confirmed fatalities in the targeted blasts at luxury hotels and churches on the island, including those from the UK, China, Turkey, Japan, the Netherlands, China, Portugal, Australia and India.

Three children of the Danish billionaire Anders Holch Povlsen died in Sunday’s attacks, according to the clothing company Bestseller, which he owns.

In the days before the blasts, Alma, one of his children, posted online a picture of her siblings next to a swimming pool in Sri Lanka. It is not known which of the four children survived the bombings.

The Holch Povlsens, who also own the online clothing retailer Asos, are Scotland’s largest largest private landowners and are trying to restore the Highlands in a huge re-wilding programme across Sutherland and the Grampian mountains.

A government-ordered social media blackout in Sri Lanka was hindering efforts by friends and family from outside the island to make contact with loved ones on Monday.

On Monday, the Sri Lankan high commissioner to the UK, Manisha Gunasekera, said eight British nationals were killed in the attacks.

“As of now I think there is information on eight nationals who have lost their lives and the other numbers are of other nationals,” she told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

Gunasekera said the investigations were moving “very swiftly” but warned against taking a “linear view” on the motive of the attacks.

She said: “This cuts across the ethnic and religious dimensions … it’s very difficult to see who has been targeted. It appears as if the entirety of Sri Lanka has been targeted as well as the unity and coexistence that Sri Lankans have attempted so hard to safeguard over the years.”

The British MP Tulip Siddiq tweeted that one of her relatives had been killed in the attacks but did not give any more details.

A Sri Lankan TV chef and her daughter were among the first victims of the attacks to be named after they were killed in a blast at the Shangri-La hotel, according to family members. Nisanga Mayadunne, daughter of TV cook Shantha, posted a photo on social media with the caption: “Easter breakfast with family” shortly before the attack.

Mike Pompeo, the US secretary of state, said several American citizens had been killed but it was too early to give specific details.

Stef Blok, the Dutch foreign minister, said one citizen from the Netherlands had died. He tweeted: “Horrified by the terrible attacks on this Easter Sunday in Sri Lanka. Our thoughts are with the victims, including one Dutch national at this moment. The Netherlands has passed its heartfelt condolences to the Sri Lankan people. We stand with you.”

Two Chinese nationals were killed during the blasts, the Chinese state newspaper People’s Daily reported. Earlier, the state news agency, Xinhua, said four Chinese nationals were injured and were in a stable condition in hospital.

The two Turkish engineers, named by state media as Serhan Selçuk Nariçi and Yiğit Ali Çavuş, died in the attack. They were working on a project in Sri Lanka, the state agency Anadolu said.

Japanese nationals had been injured in the terrorist attacks, according to the Kyodo News agency.

Anders Holch Povlsen

Early life

Constantinsborg Estate in Aarhus, Denmark

Anders Holch Povlsen was born in 1972 to Troels Holch Povlsen and Merete Bech Povlsen.[1] The family's first clothes store opened in 1975 in the tiny Danish town of Brande, with a population of just 7,000.[3] Other outlets soon followed. Anders was only 28 when his father made him the sole owner of Bestseller.[3] The family also has an interest, along with two Danish partners, in Bestseller Fashion Group China, a company that designs its own collections for 5,000 stores in China.

Career

He serves as its Chief Executive Officer.[3] In 2013, Povlsen bought a 10% stake in the German internet clothes retailer Zalando, becoming the third largest shareholder. Bestseller already has a 27% stake in ASOS.com, the largest UK internet-only fashion retailer.[4]

In April 2019, Anders Holch Povlsen's net worth was estimated to be US$7.9B.[1]

Landowner

Scotland

Aldourie Castle

In 2018/2019 it was reported that Povlsen owns 221,000-acres (89,000 ha) of land in Scotland, making him the largest landowner.[2][5] This has risen from a 2012 level of 120,000 acres (49,000 ha), when he had bought two further large estates, the 24,000-acre Ben Loyal, and 18,000-acre Kinloch Lodge, both in Sutherland, in addition to a 47,000-acre estate he bought in Inverness-shire in 2006 and a 3-acre estate near Fort William that he bought in 2008.[6] Other large Scottish landowners are the Prince of Wales and Hugh Grosvenor, better known as the Duke of Westminster.

In 2013, it was reported that Povlsen had bought the 20,000 acres (8,100 ha) Gaick Estate in Inverness-shire earlier that year, bringing his total to 150,000 acres (61,000 ha), second only to the Buccleuch Estates as Scotland's largest private landowner. In addition, Povlsen had bought land in the Borders specifically to trade it with the Forestry Commission, in return for 1,000 acres of woodland to add to his 43,000-acre Glenfeshie Estate, south of Aviemore. Povlsen bought Glenfeshie in 2006, and expanded it by buying the 4,000-acre neighbouring farm of Killiehuntly.[7]

In 2015, he bought Aldourie Castle on the banks of Loch Ness for £15 million. In October 2016 he bought 18,000-acre Eriboll estate in Sutherland for £7 million.[8]

He plans to combine his ajoining estates and re-wild them.[9]

Denmark

In Denmark, Holch Povlsen owns and resides at the old Constantinsborg Estate west of Aarhus, along with substantial farmland and forests.[10]

Romania

Holch Povlsen has bought land in Romania's Carpathian Mountains to create a wilderness reserve for the surviving wolves, bears and lynx.[7]

Personal life

Povlsen is married to Anne Storm-Pedersen[11] and lives in Aarhus, Denmark.[1]

Three of his four children were killed in the 2019 Sri Lanka Easter bombings.[12][13]
