Not that ridiculous. A diesel generator running at steady-state optimal RPM is far, far more efficient than a gasoline engine ramping up and down in traffic. The wall-to-wheel efficiency of a Li-ion battery based electric car will be around ~85%. Plus regenerative breaking.

Tesla doesn't. They're not in the raw lithium business. But a worn-out battery is a better source than any ore that could ever be found. So someone is recycling them. Just like lead-acid batteries.
