Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine of Serbia met with US president Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump in Florida on Monday. The Serbian royals were the president’s guests at the Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach.

A statement on the royal webpage states: “Their Royal Highnesses were delighted to see President Donald Trump and Mrs. Melania Trump again. On this occasion Their Royal Highnesses also met and talked to Mr. Wilbur Ross, United States Secretary of Commerce, and his spouse Mrs. Hilary Geary.”

The Serbian Royals and President Trump have met many times before. In 2016 Crown Prince Alexander of Serbia was the very first royal to send his congratulations to then President-elect Trump. Melania Trump, the present First Lady of the United States, was born in 1970 in Novo Mesto – at the time part of Yugoslavia, now part of Slovenia.

The Serbian royals have close ties to the USA. King Peter of Yugoslavia, Crown Prince Alexander’s father, lived in exile in the US for many years. At the beginning of October every year, the Crown Prince and Princess visit New York to host a charity lunch to raise money for the treatment of cancer patients in Serbia. President Trump’s former wife, Ivana is a regular guest at this event.

In July last year, Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine attended the opening of the exhibition ‘Together We Win“ about American-Serbian friendship, organized on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Serbian Day. The annual celebration of Serbian Day was first organised in the United States of America on 28 July 1918.

The Serbian flag was raised on the White House roof in 1918, and the scientist Mihajlo Pupin, who was the honorary consul at that time, as well as a friend of President Woodrow Wilson, played a major role in this act.
