Who would you rather protect NK? China or Russia? Well, neither, but if it has to be one I would go with Russia any day.
Meeting #1: Trump sets the stage, gets a few wins out of it such as soldiers coming home
Meeting #2: Failure? Not at all, Trump met with Putin several times now and explained the plan for NK. #2 was to tell Kim that the plan is in motion. Trump can't make any actual deals with Kim until Mueller report is finished and the "BLOCKADE" is removed.
Mueller Rerport released, Trump is innocent and legitimate.
Pompeo and Trump float Meeting #3
Russia/NK Meeting #1: Suddenly, Kim meets with Putin, says they need 'security', ie. if NK gives up their only defensive measure, who will protect them from China or even South Korea from taking over the whole country?
Meeting #3 couldn't happen before Mueller clears. Because Putin can't make a deal that Trump would honor unless he's CLEARED 100% of Russian collusion.
Big Picture:
-
Trump has the dirt on U1 and can cancel the whole program, which Putin of course wouldn't like.
-
Was U1 originally going to get enrinched Uranium to either NK or Iran? Was Putin fooled or aware of this plot?
-
Losing NK will fuck up China in many ways, except I can't articulate at the moment. I have a feeling they're somehow linked to China's Organ program, as Q hinted at human farms (Matrix/garden analogy)
-
Does China use NK as a way to threaten the world with Nukes by proxy? I just had a random hunch that whenever NK gets aid from the US that China also gets some sort of concessions simultaneously (but of course, independently, nothing to see here??)

Is this related to how China took over American manufacturing and is now almost completely in control of Hollywood?
