South Wales Police said they were aware of an incident at the works and that emergency services were in attendence. The force adds that further information will be released imminently. On Twitter one local wrote: “Huge explosion in Port Talbot just woke me up, the house shook for a good while and I actually thought it was an earthquake again.”
Speaking to Express.co.uk, one witness said: “There have been multiple helicopters flying over and around the steel works.
“There are also loads of sirens which is expected.”
Reports on Twitter suggest that locals felt “three large bangs” coming from the site.
