Germany owes Poland over $850 billion in WW2 reparations: senior lawmaker

WARSAW (Reuters) - Germany could owe Poland more than $850 billion in reparations for damages it incurred during World War Two and the brutal Nazi occupation, a senior ruling party lawmaker said.

Some six million Poles, including three million Polish Jews, were killed during the war and Warsaw was razed to the ground following a 1944 uprising in which about 200,000 civilians died.

Germany, one of Poland’s biggest trade partners and a fellow member of the European Union and NATO, says all financial claims linked to World War Two have been settled.

“Poland lost not only millions of its citizens but it was also destroyed in an unusually brutal way,” Arkadiusz Mularczyk, who heads the Polish parliamentary committee on reparations, told Reuters in an interview.

“Many (victims) are still alive and feel deeply wronged.”

His comments come a month before European Parliament elections in which populist and nationalist parties are expected to do well. Poland will also hold national elections later this year, with PiS still well ahead of its rivals in opinion polls.

DoJ Launches Criminal Probe Into Ford Over Emissions Irregularities

As reporters combed through Ford's Q1 earnings filing after Thursday evening's blockbuster report, which sent the automatker's shares soaring more than 8% in after-hours trade, they stumbled upon an important nugget: The company disclosed that the DoJ has launched a criminal investigation into emissions certifications irregularities that the company self-reported back in February.

Before traders get carried away, Ford has caveated this by reiterating that the potential violations don't involve 'defeat devices' like those used in some Volkswagen diesel engines to deliberately cheat American emissions testing.

Ford said the issue at the center of the probe is related to "road load estimations," which means the company's calculations of individual vehicle emissions may have been skewed.

Father of tragic Emiliano Sala dies suddenly in Argentina after suffering heart attack

Horacio Sala, the father of tragic footballer Emiliano Sala, has passed away suddenly in his native Argentina after suffering a heart attack just three months after a plane crash claimed the life of his son.

A distraught Horacio was pictured among thousands of locals at his son's funeral in February, after the light aircraft carrying the 28-year-old striker crashed into the English channel en route to Cardiff from northern France, killing him and the pilot.

On Friday, local politician Julio Muller confirmed the news to local media that former truck driver Horacio had also passed away during the night.

2019 doesn't let up in shocking us with news in this town," Muller said, The Telegraph reports. "At 5 o'clock in the morning, the lady, his wife, rang me and she was very upset.

"The doctors were there but when I arrived at their home, he had already died."

Former Ligue 1 striker Sala, who was on the way to sign for Premier League club Cardiff City from Nantes for £15 million ($19 million), made a chilling message to his father moments before the crash, telling him how "scared" he was.
