This was also around the time that DuPont patented nylon, which is used for many of the same things that hemp is used for.

There's also the added "cool" nature to pot since it's illegal, and black markets can be useful and profitable if you control them, think the cocaine and heroin imported by the clowns.

To each his own, I respect peoples' decisions, just hate being preached at about the harmful effects by people that have never smoked. I especially hate when people who have never smoked claim driving while high is just as bad as driving drunk. As someone who has regrettably done both, I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt a drunk driver is almost infinitely more dangerous than a stoned driver.
