Let's say spam is 5%. Fine, nobody really cares.

What if it's 25%?

What if it's 99? and nobody can talk or post anything?

Where do you draw the line between free speech and denial of service to others who want to exercise free speech?

 

I don't know the answer. But try the thought experiment with different percentages and see what you think. How does one solve the dilemma?

Do the thought experiment. What if spam is 750 posts out of 751? 99.9999%? What if every bread but one in a thousand is 100% spam? What if authentic organic posts are just one in 100,000,000? Then it's not a board anymore because no comms can take place.

DDoS attacks reduce available server CPUs, consume a large fraction of network bandwidth, use memory and buffers. The definition of a DDoS is not that it completely shuts down everything, only that it deliberately consumes resources.
