BREAD

Matthew 16:11-12

"How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees." Then they understood that He did not say to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

When the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper ran a front-page article asking, ‘Which one is Merkel, which one is Clinton?’, comparing cropped snaps of similarly sensible suits as worn by the Chancellor and America’s then Secretary of State, Merkel had it framed and presented it to Hillary Clinton as a gift, at a White House state luncheon in 2011.

Merkel’s lacklustre outfits could simply be a reflection of a basic disinterest in fashion. As the daughter of a Protestant pastor, it’s unlikely she had much exposure to fashion magazines while growing up in East Germany

Merkel seems to feel no need to prove her status through what she wears

Who gave Mrs Merkel her new look? 2005.

Mrs Merkel's trademark pudding bowl style disappeared when it became clear she would run against Mr Schröder in the general election.

The attempt to feminise her image has been compared to the make-over given to Lady Thatcher. In her early years as prime minister her hairstyle was softened and her voice made smoother by voice coaches.

"But Mrs Merkel is very private about her hair, and the less she has to read about it, the happier she is."

According to Sander, the character of Snow White was based on the life of Margarete von Waldeck, a German countess born to Philip IV in 1533. At the age of 16, Margarete was forced by her stepmother, Katharina of Hatzfeld to move away to Wildungen in Brussels. There, Margarete fell in love with a prince who would later become Phillip II of Spain.

Margarete’s father and stepmother disapproved of the relationship as it was ‘politically inconvenient’. Margarete mysteriously died at the age of 21, apparently having been poisoned. Historical accounts point to the King of Spain, who opposing the romance, may have dispatched Spanish agents to murder Margarete.

So what about the seven dwarfs? Margarete's father owned several copper mines that employed children as quasi-slaves. The poor conditions caused many to die at a young age, but those that survived had severely stunted growth and deformed limbs from malnutrition and the hard physical labour. As a result, they were often referred to as the ‘poor dwarfs’.

As for the poison apple, Sanders believes this stems from an historical event in German history in which an old man was arrested for giving poison apples to children who he believed were stealing his fruit.
