Netanyahu calls summit on ‘upsurge’ in anti-Semitic attacks worldwide after California shooting

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has condemned the shooting at a California synagogue, and announced that he will host a summit to discuss the increasing number of anti-Semitic attacks around the world.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Israeli leader said that “the international community must step up the struggle against anti-Semitism.” Netanyahu also stated that he would convene a special meeting to discuss issues surrounding the “upsurge” in anti-Semitic attacks “around the world.”

The comments come in the wake of a shooting at a synagogue in Poway, near San Diego, California, which killed one worshipper and left three others injured.

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin also weighed in, describing the recent shooting as “a painful reminder that anti-Semitism and hatred of Jews is still with us, everywhere.”

He added: "No country and no society are immune (to anti-Semitism). Only through education for Holocaust remembrance and tolerance can we deal with this plague."

Germany and France have raised alarm over an uptick in anti-Semitic violence and vandalism, while the United States has experienced another deadly synagogue shooting in just the last six months.

A shooting that occurred in October at a synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania killed 11 people and injured seven, making it the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in the United States.

In December, the FBI arrested an admirer of Islamic State who was allegedly plotting to carry out a copycat attack in Toledo, Ohio.

Last week we first noted that something unexpected has been going on in overnight funding markets: ever since March 20, the Effective Fed Funds rate has been trading above the IOER. This was unexpected for the simple reason that it is not supposed to happen by definition.

As a reminder, ever since the financial crisis, in order to push the effective fed funds rate above zero at a time of trillions in excess reserves, the Fed was compelled to create a corridor system for the fed funds rate which was bound on the bottom and top by two specific rates controlled by the Federal Reserve: the corridor "floor" was the overnight reverse repurchase rate (ON-RRP) which usually coincides with the lower bound of the fed funds rate, while on top, the effective fed funds rate is bound by the rate the Fed pays on Excess Reserves (IOER), i.e., the corridor "ceiling."

Or at least that's the theory. In practice, the effective FF tends to occasionally diverge from this corridor, and when it does, it prompts fears that the Fed is losing control over the most important instrument available to it: the price of money, which is set via the fed funds rate. And ever since March 20, this fear is front and center because as shown in the chart below, starting on March 20, the effective Fed Funds rate rose above the IOER first by just 1 basis point, and then, last Friday spiked as much as 4 bps above IOER.

Boeing whistleblower reports new issue with 737 Max Jets – report

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is reportedly considering an entirely new angle on its investigation into Boeing’s 737 Max line of jets after a company insider called a hotline to report a new issue with the aircraft.

All 737 Max planes across the world were grounded by regulators after two of the aircraft crashed in separate incidents that claimed 346 lives.

At least four current or former Boeing employees called the FAA hotline to make complaints about the 737 Max line after Ethiopia’s transport minister released a preliminary report on the March crash of Ethiopian Airlines flight 302 that killed 157 people, CNN is reporting.

The whistleblower complaints mainly focused on widely known issues with the planes’ angle of attack sensor, a piece of equipment which measures the plane’s angle in the air, and its Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) which is responsible for adjusting the plane’s angle to prevent stalling.

However one of the complaints highlighted a previously unreported issue which involves a “foreign object” damaging the wiring of the angle of attack sensor. An FAA source reportedly said that it is considering a new approach to the probe because of the report.

Boeing has yet to respond to RT.com’s request for comment on the whistleblower reports.

Boeing shareholders have filed a class action lawsuit against the aircraft maker, accusing it of withholding information on safety deficiencies in the 737 Max planes. The company’s Chief Executive Dennis Muilenburg and Chief Financial Officer Gregory Smith are reportedly named among the defendants.

Trump ‘Outs’ Judge Napolitano, Says He Came Asking For SCOTUS Nod

President Donald Trump tweeted after Saturday’s rally in Wisconsin an attack on Judge Andrew Napolitano, claiming the judge had come to him privately to ask for a Supreme Court nomination.

“Thank you to brilliant and highly respected attorney Alan Dershowitz for destroying the very dumb legal argument of ‘Judge’ Andrew Napolitano….” Trump began, following his praise of Harvard professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz with an immediate pivot to an attack on Napolitano.

“….Ever since Andrew came to my office to ask that I appoint him to the U.S. Supreme Court, and I said NO, he has been very hostile! Also asked for pardon for his friend. A good ‘pal’ of low ratings Shepard Smith,” the president concluded.

Trump appeared to be referring to the fallout from the recently-released Mueller report, which Napolitano has argued on his Fox Nation show “Judge Napolitano’s Chambers” stands as proof that the president obstructed justice.

“Prosecutors prosecute people who interfere with government functions and that’s what the president did by obstruction, where is this going to end? I don’t know, but I am disappointed in the behavior of the president,” Napolitano said, calling that behavior “immoral,” “criminal,” “defenseless” and “condemnable.”

Dershowitz responded to Napolitano’s comments by noting during an appearance on “The Ingraham Angle” that because it was within the president’s purview to terminate the investigation or fire special counsel Robert Mueller, any attempts he made to do so could not be described as “obstruction.”

“In my introduction to ‘The Mueller Report,’ I go through the elements of obstruction of justice,” Dershowitz explained. “The act itself has to be illegal. It can’t be an act that is authorized by Article II of the Constitution.”

A Congressional Jewish Caucus Doesn’t Formally Exist, But It Might Soon

Some Jewish members of Congress and the president of a leading Jewish organization have recently begun pushing to create a formal Congressional Jewish Caucus, even though those Congress members have met informally for decades.

Jack Rosen, one of the strongest advocates for its creation, is president of the American Jewish Congress. He published an op-ed in The Hill earlier this month, explaining why he felt the need for the caucus was brought to the forefront by the recent House resolution intended to condemn anti-Semitic statements by Democratic Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar.

“Well, I think the House resolution that watered down a resolution that would have identified Omar, in particular, for her anti-Semitic statements was troubling. And I think it was less strong than a series of decisions and votes that I found to be more about party politics and less about America’s values. I think what we saw in the resolution was a different moment in recent American history,” Rosen told The Daily Caller on Thursday.

He went on to explain that he feels that a formal Jewish caucus could have gone into House Speaker Pelosi’s office to make their own demands, adding that the “progressive Caucus came in and the black caucus came in and said, ‘You don’t have our vote unless you broaden the resolution to include everybody.'”

France Saw Record Breaking 123,000 Asylum Applications in 2018

Final figures on asylum requests in France for 2018 have been released this week showing another record-breaking year with numbers higher than previously estimated.

According to figures released Wednesday by the French Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons (OFPRA), 123,625 people had applied for asylum in 2018, a 22.7 per cent increase from 2017 which had also been a record-breaking year.

The figures, reported by French newspaper Le Figaro, are also higher than a previous estimate released in January by the French Interior Ministry which had claimed the number of applications stood slightly lower at 122,743.

OFPRA reported that “46,700 people have been granted refugee status or subsidiary protection” and noted that the level had never been reached before.

Afghan asylum seekers made up the largest single nationality among those claiming asylum in 2018, up 55 per cent from the previous year. OFPRA explained the rise was attributed to the ongoing violence in the provinces, where the asylum seekers originate, carried out by groups like Islamic State and other radical jihadists as well as expulsions of Afghans from Iran and Pakistan.

Georgians saw the largest increase with 7,005 people applying for asylum, an increase of 256 per cent.

The figures likely do not encompass the full number of migrants who entered France as asylum seekers in 2018 as they do not count Dublin agreement migrants who may have already applied for asylum in another European Union member state.

Last year, it was reported that the number of illegal migrants living in the suburbs of Paris alone, could run as high 400,000, around 20 per cent of the total population of the area.

The number of asylum applications in France is starkly contrasted by the massive reduction of newly arrived migrants in neighbouring Italy where the policies of populist Interior Minister Matteo Salvini has reduced the numbers by more than 90 per cent.

In recent years there has been a shortage of measles vaccines in Ukraine. Vaccination rates had dropped to 31% in 2016 and were the lowest in Europe. And yet there were hardly any cases of measles. In 2017 sufficient vaccines became available for a ‘catch-up campaign’ and 90% of the children in Ukraine received the MMR. Since then there has been an explosion of cases of measles. The number has already surpassed 12,000! Why is the media ignoring the current outbreak of measles in Ukraine? And what is really going on?

Washington passes bill to become first state to compost human bodies, if signed by the governor, allows dead people to be composted – and used for mulch

It may soon be legal for the dead to push daisies, or any other flower, in backyard gardens across Washington state. The state legislature recently passed a bill that, if signed by the governor, allows human bodies to be composted – and used for mulch.

As the nation ages, U.S. funeral practices are changing. Rates of cremation surpassed 50 percent in 2016, overtaking burials as the most popular choice. The Census Bureau, in a 2017 report, predicted a death boom: One million more Americans are projected to die in 2037 than they did in 2015. Human composting, its supporters say, is an eco-friendly option that can meet this growing demand. A Seattle-based company called Recompose plans to offer a service called “natural organic reduction” (it has two patents pending) that uses microbes to transform the departed – skin, bones and all.

“We have this one universal human experience, of death, and technology has not changed what we do in any meaningful way,” said state Sen. Jamie Pedersen, D, who introduced the bill that passed with bipartisan support on April 19. “There are significant environmental problems” with burying and burning bodies, he said.

Joshua Trey Barnett, an expert on ecological communication at the University of Minnesota Duluth, listed the flaws in conventional burials: “We embalm bodies with toxic solutions, bury them in expensive caskets made of precious woods and metals and then indefinitely commit them to a plot of land.” Though incineration has a smaller ecological footprint, estimates suggest the average cremated body emits roughly 40 pounds of carbon and requires nearly 30 gallons of fuel to burn.

The bill awaits Gov. Jay Inslee, a Democrat, who placed climate change at the center of the presidential bid he announced in March. “The bill passed the Legislature with bipartisan support and appears to be eco-friendly,” said Tara Lee, a spokeswoman in Inslee’s office. Inslee has 20 days to review the bill, which arrived on his desk Thursday. “He has not stated how he will act on this,” Lee said.

Burial practices are largely matters of state, not federal, law. The bill, which would take effect on May 1, 2020, also would legalize alkaline hydrolysis. That method turns bodies to liquid using a base such as lye. In the past decade, more than a dozen states have approved it.

Pedersen said he would be “shocked, frankly,” if the governor did not sign the bill into law.
