Readout of President Donald J. Trump’s Meeting with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan
On April 26, 2019, President Donald J. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcomed Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Mrs. Akie Abe of Japan to the White House. President Trump and Prime Minister Abe held an in-depth exchange of views on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), reviewing recent developments and discussing the way forward. They reiterated their firm resolve to advance their shared vision for a Free and Open Indo-Pacific. The two leaders discussed the enduring strength of the United States–Japan alliance, which is a cornerstone for peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and around the globe. The leaders also discussed a range of economic issues, including priorities for the June G20 meeting in Osaka, Japan, and reviewed the state of bilateral trade negotiations. Finally, the President and First Lady conveyed their deep appreciation for being invited to travel to Japan as the first state guests following the enthronement of Emperor Naruhito.
