Do I see a bunch of chemical operations (buildings) on the shore of a LAKE, with crop fields packed densely on the adjacent land? That can't be a good place to raise crops and I'd be shocked if that lake was in any way clean.

I don't know that our forebears had it together in that sense. But at one time not so many laws were necessary. People governed their own behavior and either adhered to, or broke, moral laws, but either way, everybody knew what was right and wrong.
As a culture and as a world, we need to restore that internal sense of right and wrong, so that people do good and desire to do good. All fail and err, but the righteous will get up, dust themselves off, and keep trying.
