FBI director: Protecting 2018 election was a 'dress rehearsal' for 2020

Protecting the 2018 U.S. midterm elections from foreign meddling was a “dress rehearsal for the big show” of the 2020 presidential elections, which adversaries are expected to target, FBI Director Christopher Wray said Friday.

“Our adversaries are going to keep adapting and upping their game,” Wray said in a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations, adding that multiple nation-states have learned from Russia’s influence operations in the 2016 presidential election.

Embassies targeted in ongoing spearphishing campaign that weaponized Microsoft Excel files

Embassies around the world have been targeted in a recent spate of spearphishing email attacks from Russian hackers, according to a new report from researchers at Check Point Technologies.

The emails, which the hackers filled with U.S. State Department logos and “Top Secret” labels to trick victims into believing they were legitimate, were actually laced with malicious Microsoft Excel files. The documents were capable of leveraging a trojanized version of remote access software, TeamViewer, to gain control of infected computers.

After gaining access and control, the hackers’ code allowed them to take screenshots of the victims’ PCs, allowing the hackers to steal victims’ usernames and login credentials.

Fire rages through 21-storey Manila building, 1 dead

MANILA: A fire raged through the top floors of a 21-storey residential building in the Philippine capital on Monday, in the middle of a scorching summer. Officials said firefighters managed to guide most residents to safety, but at least one person, a woman, was killed.

Mayor Edwin Olivarez said by telephone that more than 100 fire engines battled the blaze at the Pacific Coast Plaza condominium in Paranaque city, where one lane of a coastal road along Manila Bay was closed due to falling debris. At least one woman was found dead in the upper floors, radio DZMM reported.

A firefighter was given first aid due to fatigue.

Investigators will inspect the floors gutted by the fire, which was put under control about three hours after it started. The fire apparently started in or near the garbage chute that runs from the top to the ground floor, Olivarez said.

UPS eyes U.S. project with Merck & Co for in-home vaccinations

United Parcel Service Inc wants to get beyond U.S. doorsteps with a new push into healthcare.

The world’s largest package delivery firm is preparing to test a U.S. service that dispatches nurses to vaccinate adults in their homes, Reuters has learned, as the company and its healthcare clients work to fend off cost pressures and competitive threats from Amazon.com.

UPS did not disclose which vaccines it would be using in the project, but drug and vaccine maker Merck & Co told Reuters it is looking at partnering with the company for the initiative.

The project, previously unreported, shows how UPS is targeting a larger slice of the $85 billion outsourced healthcare logistics market. Deutsche Post’s DHL Group dominates the market, which is expected to grow to $105 billion by 2021

Putin considers building bridge from Russia to North Korea

Russian President Vladimir Putin has tasked the Ministry for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic to study the project of a car bridge connecting Russia’s Primorsky Region and North Korea, the president’s envoy to the Far Eastern federal district said on Monday.

“This question was discussed during Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin’s meeting with the North Korean leader. The head of the state resolved to take the Far Eastern development ministry with analyzing this project,” Yuri Trutnev said.

He did not elaborate on when the project may be designed.

The 39.4-km border with North Korea (of which about 22 km are maritime boundaries) is the shortest of Russia’s international borders. It runs largely along the Tumen River. The two states are connected by air and the railway-only Friendship Bridge over the Tumen River.

Sri Lanka Bans Burqas and Niqabs One Week After Easter Bombings

One week after the Easter bombings in Sri Lanka that killed over 250 people, the government has banned all face coverings including burqas and niqabs.

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena announced on Sunday that the ban will go into effect the following day.

“Any form of face covering that will hinder the identification of a person is banned under emergency regulations,” the announcement from President Sirisena’s office said.

The ban comes as an investigation into the attacks found that a large number of women were involved, though Sri Lanka’s Justice Ministry had already been considering the ban.

The Sri Lankan military has also announced that at least 15 people were killed during a fierce gun battle with militants on the east coast on Friday, including six children, The Herald reports.

“If Sri Lanka adopts the burqa ban, it would join the group of nations in Asia, Africa, and Europe that have done so in the interest of preventing terrorists from using the burqa to evade police or hide explosives,” India Today reports. “Among the nations that have enacted a ban on the item are Chad, Cameroon, Gabon, Morocco, Austria, Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Belgium, and Xinjiang, a Muslim-majority province in northwestern China.”

ALGIERS (Reuters) - Algeria’s finance minister and ex police chief appeared in court on Monday, joining a list of powerful figures to face judicial investigations since mass protests forced the resignation of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika this month.

‘Nobody Will Go Back’: Christians Flee Middle East After Fall of Islamic State

The number of Christians in the birthplace of their faith, the greater Middle East, continues to plummet months after the Islamic State, which waged a genocidal campaign against Christians, lost its “caliphate” in Iraq and Syria, Breitbart News learned from various experts, including an archbishop.

“Unfortunately, it can be stated that the Islamic State group’s anti-Christian campaign was very successful in Iraq, and to a certain extent, successful in Syria,” John Hajjar, the co-chair of the American Mideast Coalition for Democracy (AMCD) and co-director of the Middle East Christian Committee (MECHRIC), told Breitbart News.

“I think we have no more hope,” Archbishop Vicken Aykazian, the diocesan legate in America’s capital and ecumenical director for the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Orthodox Church of America, also told Breitbart News, referring to the future of Christianity in its Middle East cradle. “Middle East Christians have no nation that protects them openly.”

Austria: Asylum seekers make death threats against asylum centre employees

Information from the Austrian Interior Ministry has revealed that asylum home staff members have faced numerous threats on their lives from resentful asylum seekers. According to the ministry, no less than 15 serious incidents have occurred in the last year.

As reported by Kronen Zeitung, the information came about in response to a question posed to Austria’s Interior Minister Herbert Kickl of the national populist Freedom Party.

According to the report, many of those seeking asylum have made violent threats against asylum centre employees in order to be transferred to different facilities. In Maria Enzerdorf, a small Austrian town of 8,000 people, an asylum seeker intimated an employee with an iron bar simply because he felt like he should be moved to another location.

Varying motivations have acted as catalysts for additional incidents of death threats made against public employees.

In Salzburg, a migrant threatened to murder an employee over food.

In Bergheim, due to a lack of internet access, two migrants became so incensed that they threaten to kill one of the care workers.

A similar case occurred in Italy last year when a 26-year-old Senegalese migrant physically assaulted an asylum home worker because the home hadn’t apparently attended to his requests to set up wireless internet.

Several cases in Austrian asylum homes have also turned physical with a number of employees asserting that migrants have attempted to intimate workers by puffing their chests out at them as well as at staff security guards. In another instance, a conflict with one of the migrants resulted in a worker being injured.
