Refugee cover model??? Wtf!?!?

(((▪︎Sports Illustrated to feature burkini-clad cover model for the first time▪︎)))

Somali-American model Halima Aden is set to become the first woman to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated in a burkini, the BBC reported Monday ahead of the magazine's annual swimsuit issue.

"Young girls who wear a hijab should have women they look up to in any and every industry. We are now seeing politicians, business women, television reporters, and other successful hijabi women in visible roles and that is the message we need to be sending,” Aden told the BBC. “The response has been incredible and I'm so honored that Sports Illustrated has taken the step to showcase the beauty that modestly dressed women possess."

Aden, 21, grew up in a refugee camp in Kenya, moved to the U.S. at the age of 7 and began wearing the hijab shortly thereafter, according to the BBC. She was a semi-finalist in the 2016 Miss Minnesota pageant, where she was the first participant to wear the Islamic head covering.

Centor for Disease Control???

Mental health/gun control angle???

(((▪︎House Dems propose $25 million to study gun violence prevention▪︎)))

House Democrats on Monday proposed $25 million in funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to study gun violence prevention.

A draft measure released from House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.) calls for the agency to study firearm injury and mortality prevention. If passed, it would mark the first time in more than 20 years that the spending bill for the CDC has included funding for this type of research.

The funding will "ensure the CDC can conduct scientific research to reduce injuries and save lives from gun violence," Lowey said in a statement.

(((▪︎Biden calls for giving everyone the choice to buy into Medicare▪︎)))

Former Vice President Joe Biden on Monday called for giving everyone the option to buy into Medicare, but stopped short of supporting the full Medicare for all proposal backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).

Biden framed his approach as giving people a choice whether they want government-run insurance or to stay on a private plan. In contrast, the proposal from Sanders, a rival presidential candidate, would require everyone to be on the government plan.

“Whether you're covered through your employer or on your own or not, you all should have a choice to be able to buy into a public option plan for Medicare,” Biden said in a speech in Pittsburgh, the first major address of his presidential campaign, which he announced last week.

“Your choice,” Biden added. “And if the insurance company isn't doing the right thing by you, you should have another choice.”
