You must understand that the thrust does not need an atmosphere to push against.

The expanding gas pushes against the nozzle itself.

Because the gas is mass that pushes with a greater force than the mass of the rocket.

Goddammit… that is why rockets function better in space because there is NO AIR that causes friction to the rocket.
