I CC in NC. One day I was standing in line at the supermarket and hadn't got my shirt down quite as far as I thought. I was not only printing, I was exposed. (Either way is okay, I'm licensed to conceal and open carry is the law here) and an old man from up north noticed and COMPLIMENTED me for carrying. Said he felt a lot safer around people who carried (legally). So there is one real-life experience. There have been a couple other positive incidents, but that one comes quickly to mind. People notice the firearm and then they appraise the holder. We talked for a couple minutes and he was from Connecticut.

That said, for a while northerners were SWATTING open carriers for sport. That's a good way to get someone killed. After a few of those, the police threatened to file charges against a couple callers and that non-sense stopped.

I don't know of anywhere that open carry is illegal IF concealed carry would be acceptable.
