Genealogy is a hobby. Have helped others with theirs.

Before anyone can claim that they "never owned", they'll need to go back to every grandfather who was in the colonies or United States prior to 1865, find their wills, and read them carefully first.

Think about how many grandfathers you had in the generations prior to the Civil War. The number doubles every generation. Confirming that there was not a single slave owner to be found in all those men could take a very long time.

I've surprised several people who claimed their families never owned slaves.

I've learned to never pass judgement on anyone, because I did not know them or what the conditions in their community were.

I've learned that human beings usually do whatever it takes to survive and put food on the table.

And I've learned to never, EVER say "never", because that word will jump out from behind a door and kick your ass later.
