Move over Israel: US becomes second air force to bomb Middle East with F-35 jets

BEIRUT, LEBANON (11:25 A.M.) – Israel is no longer the sole country to bomb a site in the Middle East with the F-35 stealth fighter, as new reports from Iraq have revealed the U.S. Air Force’s use of the warplane.

According to Turkish state-owned Anadolu Agency, two F-35A jets bombed an Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/IS/Daesh) tunnel network in western Iraq, marking the first time the U.S. has used these warplanes in combat.

“We have the ability to gather, fuse and pass so much information, that we make every friendly aircraft more survivable and lethal,” said Lt. Col. Yosef Morris, 4th Fighter Squadron commander and F-35A pilot.

“That, combined with low-observable technology, allows us to really complement any combined force package and be ready to support AOR [area of responsibility] contingencies.”

Teen Molested by Catholic School Teacher Gets Record $8-Million Settlement From LA. Archdiocese

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has agreed to pay $8 million to a teenager who was sexually abused by the athletic director at her Catholic high school who had continued to work despite prior allegations of misconduct, it was announced Tuesday.

A court finalized the settlement last week of a negligence lawsuit, said David Ring, an attorney for the teenager.

The archdiocese has paid out more than $740 million in sexual abuse settlements over the past 15 years. Ring said the $8 million is the largest payment to a single individual in any of the cases.

“The Archdiocese recognizes that there was serious harm done to the life of the victim-survivor,” the archdiocese said in a statement. “We hope that the settlement will allow her to heal and move forward with her education and lifetime goals. The Archdiocese apologizes for the impact that this caused in her life.”

Facebook’s announcement of a new dating feature, Secret Crush, on its updated app didn’t go down well on social media, where it was mocked and slammed as another bad idea for user privacy.

The new Secret Crush function allows people to choose friends they are romantically interested in, and the object of their attraction will only be notified if they return the feeling.

The new feature is available in countries where Facebook already rolled out its dating service, including Argentina, Canada, Thailand and Mexico, as well as in 14 new countries including Brazil, Singapore and Malaysia.

Somali American police officer Mohamed Noor shot Aussie Justine Damond in July 2017.

Damond called the police to report a possible assault down the alley behind her home.

When she went out to meet the police car in her pajamas Noor reached over his partner and shot her dead.

Mohamed was the first Somali officer in his precinct.

16 dead in suspected Maoist attack on police convoy in India

New Delhi, India At least 15 police personnel and one civilian were killed in a suspected Maoist insurgent attack in the west-central state of Maharashtra on Wednesday, according to Indian officials.

The men were traveling in convoy to provide reinforcement to a police post in the Gadchiroli district when a landmine detonated, killing all 16 men, including the driver.

Police have blamed the blast on Naxal militants known to be active in the region. In a press conference on Wednesday, the Director General of Police, Subodh Jaiswal said the insurgents "want to overthrow the state established by the constitution of India."

"We are very firm in our belief that they need to be dealt with the full power of the state behind us."

Militant attacks in several states, including Maharashtra, Odisha and Chhattisgarh, where the rebel movement still has traction, are common.

The obscure advisory committees at the heart of the U.S. drug pricing debate

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Expectations were high last year for three new migraine drugs hitting the market from Amgen Inc, Eli Lilly and Co and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries.

Priced around $7,000 each, the drugmakers called them “breakthrough” treatments designed to prevent migraines when taken year-round, and estimated that millions of patients could benefit. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration said Amgen’s Aimovig – the first of the three drugs approved – was an “important addition” to available treatments.

But a small group of external medical experts who quietly advise U.S. health insurers on new drugs was not impressed, according to a private meeting held at UnitedHealth Group’s OptumRx offices in Chicago that was attended by Reuters.

They concluded that all three medicines offered no clear benefit over drugs already on the market and that insurers could consider them optional when it came to health coverage. They advised putting limits into place on their use.
