AN EAST COBBER has been elected president of the National Rifle Association, replacing retired Lt. Col. Oliver North.

Carolyn Meadows has a long relationship with the NRA. She’s been on the board since 2003, has served as interim president and as second vice chair.

Her involvement with the group dates back to the 1980s, when she became a Republican National committeewoman. A member of the Sprayberry High School Class of 1956, Meadows has lived in Cobb most of her life. Her maiden name is Dodgen. Dodgen Middle School was named after her father.

Meadows had just returned home from the NRA meeting when the MDJ called.

“It’s a big deal for me, and the reason I did it is because I love my country, and I’m tired of these hijackers coming after us, so when I was asked to run for it, that was why I did it. Not for any fame or anything like that. I’ve had enough of that in my life. I do it not only for my home but for my country,” Meadows said.

U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Georgia, said she was elected unanimously.

“She has been a lifelong leader committed to protecting our cherished Constitutional freedoms. I think she’s a wise choice to lead the NRA, and I believe those who know her and who have worked with her would agree,” Isakson said.
