Bitcoin hits fresh 2019 highs, driving other cryptocurrencies up

The cryptocurrency market leader, bitcoin, surged to its highest level in almost six months on Friday, trading at around $5,800, as prices for other popular digital currencies also jumped.

Bitcoin was up 6.13 percent, trading at $5,796.11 as of 12:30am GMT, according to CoinMarketCap. Earlier in the day, its price reached $5,864, the highest point since November 14. At the same time, bitcoin market cap exceeded $100 billion, another record high for around half a year.

Other digital assets also rallied on Friday, with the second and third biggest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, ethereum and Ripple’s XRP, gaining 5.13 percent and around two percent respectively. Bitcoin cash rose 5.8 percent and was trading at $292.76. Rounding out the top 5, litecoin jumped nearly eight percent.

It is not immediately clear what triggered the rally. The entire crypto market has added nearly $10 billion in value over the last 24 hours

Iraq to execute Daesh militant who burned Jordan pilot alive

The Iraqi supreme authorities have ratified a court decision to execute Saddam Omar Al- Jamal, a Daesh militant who is one of those responsible for the burning of a Jordanian pilot.

Muath Al-Kasasbeh was captured alive in early February 2015 when his airplane was shot down over the Syrian city of Raqqa.

A statement issued by his family yesterday said Al-Jamal was responsible for his murder and he would be executed.

Al-Jamal was arrested by the Iraqi intelligence in May, he denied responsibility for Al- Kasasbeh’s death.

In response, the Jordanian pilot’s family issued a statement saying Al-Jamal was “governor of the Euphrates”, an area controlled by Daesh at the time and where Muath’s plane was downed and therefore he had played a part in his murder.

In 2015, Daesh released a 22-minute video which purported to show the Jordanian locked in a cage while being burned alive.

US, Venezuelan military had secret deal to arrest Maduro: reports

One of the negotiators on the Venezuelan side was allegedly Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez, who is thought to have had a last-minute change of heart.

The Trump administration had an agreement in place with Venezuela’s military that President Nicolas Maduro would be arrested during this week’s attempted coup, the Spanish newspaper ABC reports, citing a source in the US National Security Council.

Washington apparently reached the deal with Venezuelan Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez via phone talks conducted over the past few months.

Padrino, alongside other ministers and generals, is said to have accepted the agreements drafted by the self-proclaimed acting president, Juan Guaido. This roadmap would include a call for fresh elections within a month — one of Guaido’s main promises — and the recognition of the opposition lawmaker as the “legitimate and interim” head of state.

Milestone: Senate Confirms 100 Trump Judges, More to Come

WASHINGTON, DC – Senators on Thursday confirmed the 100th judge nominated by President Donald Trump, marking a major milestone in the president’s pledge to replenish the federal courts with judges like the late originalist icon Antonin Scalia.

The full Senate on Thursday confirmed Rodolfo Ruiz to be a district judge on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. While that name does not ring a bell with most Americans – and while that court might not seem like a major national concern – Ruiz’s confirmation to that federal trial court represents something big regarding one of the top reasons voters sent President Trump to the White House.

Supreme Court picks have been a major topic of presidential elections for decades, but for some voters the topic seemed a bit abstract, not knowing which justice would retire from the Court at what time and therefore what would be at stake over the upcoming four-year presidential term.

With the sudden passing of Scalia in February 2016, the future of the Court went from abstract theory to crystal-clear fact.
