Positive thinking is great for convincing yourself that you really want to quit smoking and start brushing your teeth every day. Positive thinking is not so great for over-ruling the Second Law of Thermodynamics. If you can project a social persona of a positive thinker, you will be highly employable in the USA. That doesn't guarantee you'll get paid, but people will try to get some labor value out of you. I don't advise trusting Ehrenreich blindly, but Ehrenreich's criticisms of the social effects of positive thinking deserve careful reading. Further, as a scientist, I deal in claims that can be falsified, and positive thinking looks absolutely nonfalsifiable to me. Thus I can't see how to use it for science.
