Traveled out to South Dakota several years ago and there were warnings in Badlands National Park that the prairie dogs were infected by the plague and to stay away from them. Not sure if it was sylvatic plague rather than bubonic, but either one can affect humans. And in fact, I thought I saw one or two infected ones as I drove through the Park.
