Theory on why Napoleon didnt invade the U.S. :::: French losses in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) were much greater than Napoleon and his generals had anticipated, besides which they expected to win a war against rebellious slaves.

Napoleon negotiated the transfer of Luisiana/Louisiane from Spain to France with the apparent intent to re-establish a French empire in North America. The rebellion that established Haiti is what changed his plans.

This worked out to the advantage of the young United States, as Napoleon then betrayed Spain by selling the territory to the U.S. This violated the terms of the transfer, and critics in the U.S. said Pres. Jefferson had exceeded his constitutional powers in negotiating the sale. But none of these objections ultimately stood in the way of this highly unusual transaction.
