Trump escalates trade war with China with plan to raise tariffs

Donald Trump has escalated the trade war with China by announcing plans to hike the tariff imposed on $200bn of Chinese goods from 10% to 25%.

The US president also threatened to impose tariffs on all Chinese trade with America, a move which could further destabilise relations between the two economic powers.

The move is a blow to hopes that Washington and Beijing could be closing in on a deal to lift existing tariffs on each other’s exports, and end the trade dispute which began last year.

The president announced the move on Twitter, complaining that negotiations between the two countries were proceeding too slowly.

He tweeted: “For 10 months, China has been paying Tariffs to the USA of 25% on 50 Billion Dollars of High Tech, and 10% on 200 Billion Dollars of other goods. These payments are partially responsible for our great economic results. The 10% will go up to 25% on Friday.”

The move will affect more than 5,000 products made by Chinese farms and factories, from fresh and frozen food to chemicals, textiles, metalwork, building materials, electronics and consumer goods.

Trump originally imposed a 10% tariff on these goods last September, in an attempt to cut America’s trade deficit with China and force concessions on issues such as intellectual property rights. It had been scheduled to jump to 25% in January, but the president held back while talks between the two sides continued.

Currently, almost half of China’s sales to America are affected by tariffs. Trump is now threatening to impose a 25% tariff on all Chinese imports, unless Beijing agrees to a trade deal soon. That could cause further pain and disruption to the Chinese economy.

Economists have blamed the US-China trade war for a slowdown in global growth in recent months.

Swalwell calls Trump a "bad kid in the White House," stops short of backing impeachment

Referencing his parenting of two young children, California Rep. Eric Swalwell, one of the nearly two dozen Democrats seeking the party's presidential nomination, called President Trump a "really bad kid," but stopped short of supporting impeachment proceedings to remove him from office.

Asked if he would support an effort by House Democrats to impeach the president, the San Francisco area lawmaker demurred and said there should be "consequences" for Mr. Trump for his behavior detailed in special counsel Robert Mueller's report, as well as the White House's push back against multiple investigations by Democratic-controlled congressional committees.

"We have to start taking this president seriously and speaking the only language they know, which is force and consequence," Swalwell said on "Face the Nation" Sunday. "I'm a father of a 2-year-old and a 6-month-old. We're going through the terrible twos. When my son misbehaves, we take a toy away."

"We have a really bad kid at the White House, and unless we start showing that there are consequences for their actions, he's only going to get worse," he added. "And the next kid, the next president, is going to look at what we did now and judge their actions based on whether there were consequences or not."

Swalwell did not specify which "consequences" the president should face from Democrats in Congress.

Echoing comments he made last week, the White House hopeful urged fellow House Democrats to draft articles of impeachment against Attorney General William Barr, who Swalwell accused of misrepresenting Mueller's findings.

"I think you have to move this obstructor out of the way, and I'm recommending that we impeach Attorney General Barr so that we can get the information we need to protect our country," he added.
