Feds just took down a massive dark web marketplace

After a two-year investigation into one of the world’s largest dark web marketplaces, the DEA and other law enforcement partners announced the arrests of three German nationals who operated the site, which sold illegal drugs and other goods to over a million customers. The three defendants were arrested in the United States and Germany on April 23rd and 24th and now face charges in both countries for their roles as administrators of the Wall Street Marketplace (WSM). (German charges)

A fourth defendant linked to WSM was charged yesterday in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Sacramento, California. Marcos Paulo De Oliveira-Annibale, 29, of Sao Paulo, Brazil, also faces federal drug distribution and money laundering charges for allegedly acting as a moderator who, among other things, mediated disputes between vendors and their customers. Annibale, who used the online monikers “MED3LIN,” also acted as a public relations representative for WSM by, among others things, promoting WSM on websites such as Reddit, according to the complaint. The case naming Annibale was unsealed today when Brazilian authorities executed a search warrant at his residence

GOP senators push for probe of 'apparent leaks' in Russia investigation

Two top Republican senators are signaling that the intelligence community's top watchdog should probe potential "leaks" to reporters after the 2016 presidential election about the investigation into Russia's election meddling and President Trump's campaign.

Sens. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) — the chairmen of the Senate Homeland Security and Finance committees, respectively — sent a letter on Monday to Michael Atkinson, the inspector general for the intelligence community, asking if his office was investigating "apparent leaks" from the intelligence agencies.

"Texts and emails demonstrate the need to investigate leaks from agencies or entities other than FBI," the two senators wrote in their letter.

If an investigation isn't ongoing, the two senators want an explanation from Atkinson on why the watchdog office hasn't opened a probe.

A spokesperson for the intelligence community's inspector general office didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Norway to Revoke Residency Permits of Those Affiliated with Islamic State

Norwegian Minister of Justice Jøran Kallmyr has announced that the country will be revoking all residency permits granted to individuals who left Norway to go and fight or join the Islamic State in the Middle East.

The minister gave the order to the Directorate of Immigration (UDI) to withdraw the permits saying that only those with Norwegian citizenship would be allowed to step foot in the country, Norwegian tabloid Verdens Gang reports.

Kallmyr added that although Norwegian citizens would be allowed to return, it did not mean they would be exempt from the consequences of having joined the terror group.

“Norwegian citizens who have joined the Islamic State, either as warriors or with other affiliations, will be prosecuted if they return. If they have children. they will be handled by the child welfare service. This applies to those who return to Norway on their own,” Kallmyr said.

Microsoft Introduces ‘ElectionGuard’ Software to ‘Modernize’ Voting

Tech giant Microsoft is taking a step into the world of election security, offering a new open-source software called “ElectionGuard,” which it claims is an “end-to-end” voting verification system to “modernize” elections.

AP News reports that Microsoft is entering the world of election security with the introduction of new open-source software called “ElectionGuard.” The name of the new software seems quite close to Microsoft’s partner NewsGuard, the browser extension bundled with the Microsoft Edge mobile browser that purports to be the arbiter of reliability in media. In practice, NewsGuard has repeatedly verified hoax Russian election tampering stories as true while blacklisting multiple conservative news websites as “fake news.”

Now, Microsoft is offering to step in to make voting more secure and transparent, according to the company. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in an announcement on Monday at a Seattle developer’s conference that the software would help to “modernize all of the election infrastructure everywhere in the world.”

Tensions with Iran escalating beyond war of words

The Trump administration on Sunday said a U.S. carrier strike group is headed to the region in response to unspecified “troubling and escalatory indications and warnings.”

The following day, several official and semi-official Iranian news agencies hinted at responses coming later this week to mark Trump’s announcement on May 8, 2018, to abandon U.S. participation in the 2015 accord. Those responses could reportedly include Iran reducing its compliance with the agreement, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
