Lighthizer and Mnuchin Say China Reneged in Trade Talks

Mnuchin said that the talks changed direction over the weekend, describing China as moving “substantially backward.”

Lighthizer said that China is “reneging” on commitments it made in earlier talks, according to multiple reports from journalists briefed by the two men Monday afternoon.

“Over the course of the last week or so, we’ve seen an erosion in commitments by China, I would say retreating from commitments that have already been made, in our judgment,” Lighthizer said, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Lighthizer also said that he would be filing a notice in the federal register about the tariff increase, adding that the tariffs would take effect immediately on Friday, according to Jonathan Swan of Axios.

The joint briefing by Mnuchin, often considered an advocate of a softer approach to China, and Lighthizer, one of the administration’s strongest China hawks, appeared to be aimed at sending the message that the Trump administration is not divided on the subject of the new tariffs in response to China changing stance in the trade talks.

Reports: Chinese Immigrants Opening ‘Chinese-Only’ Businesses in the Philippines

A spokesman for Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said on Monday that Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III will investigate reports of Chinese-owned businesses that only accept Chinese customers on Philippine soil.

“We have to investigate that, if that is true. We cannot allow that to happen. They cannot be discriminating against Filipinos. It’s a public business and therefore it should cater to all,” spokesman Salvador Panelo said at a news briefing on Monday.

Panelo urged Filipinos who believe they have been discriminated against to file complaints with local government officials or the national Department of Trade and Industry.

“If investors coming from China would do business even in SMEs, that will be alarming because many of our countrymen will be deprived of investment opportunities,” he said.

“It’s really annoying that Filipinos are being prevented from entering restaurants,” Lacson remarked. “We’re being treated like second-class citizens in our own land.”

Pentagon: China May Have Tripled Number of Muslims in Labor Camps to 3 Million

Comments from a top Pentagon official on Friday confirmed assertions by the U.S. Department of State (DOS) this year that Beijing “significantly intensified its campaign of the mass detention of members of Muslim minority groups in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region (Xinjiang)” in 2018.

Xinjiang, China’s largest province, is home to the largest concentration of Muslims in the country, mainly from the Uighur (or Uyghur) ethnic minority group.

In December 2018, when a top DOS official estimated that Beijing was holding prisoner 800,000 Muslims, Reuters reported that Beijing had constructed up to 1,200 “Muslim Gulags” in Xinjiang, commonly known as a re-education or mind-transformation facilities.

DeVos suggests teachers go on strike during 'adult time'

"I think it's important that adults have adult disagreements on adult time, and that they not ultimately hurt kids in the process," DeVos said when asked if she supported teacher strikes at the Education Writers Association national seminar in Baltimore, according to The Associated Press.

"I think too often they're doing so by walking out of classrooms and having arguments in the way that they are."
