Have observed the same, in a different domain. Fame/recognition is one of the triggers that can motivate people to do things against their own best interest, and many in whom this trigger resides don't realize that by desiring more of the "fame", one is being controlled.
The solution I found is the same one you found – get away from the whole scene, introspect and realize the power of that trigger on your psyche, and totally relinquish any desire for fame/fortune/power.
Then you have a chance of becoming free and breaking out of the control matrix.
