NIAC Action is the grassroots, civic action organization committed to advancing peace and championing the priorities of the Iranian-American community. We are a nonpartisan nonprofit and the 501(c)4 sister organization of the National Iranian American Council, which works to strengthen the Iranian-American community and promote greater understanding between the American and Iranian people.

NIAC Action works to maximize the political influence of Iranian Americans and the pro-peace community to ensure we have a powerful voice on the issues that matter to us most. We utilize three tools: direct lobbying efforts in Washington, grassroots advocacy led by NIAC Action Chapters nationwide, and organized engagement with political candidates by NIAC Action members.

Discriminating against people on their ethnicity or country of origin is anathema to the ideals that make America great. NIAC Action works to fight back against such discrimination and ensure that the civil rights of Iranian Americans and Iranians in the U.S. are protected. NIAC Action is working to repeal a law barring Iranian dual nationals and travelers to Iran from participating in the Visa Waiver Program. This discriminatory law could provoke reciprocal restrictions that turn many Iranian-Americans into second-class citizens when traveling abroad.

Since 1992, leaders have gathered at AALD programs in various cities across the two nations to shape the direction of the bilateral relationship. These programs allow a rich and ongoing dialogue to develop across seven key themes: economics and trade, security and defence, foreign policy, domestic politics, innovation and technology, energy and climate and education, health and social inclusion.

The bilateral and bipartisan nature of the Leadership Dialogue facilitates the pragmatic and free-flowing exchange of ideas that has become a hallmark of the events. The high calibre of discussion and debate leads to the formation of support for strategic policy in both countries.

China’s Vice Premier Liu He will arrive in Washington D.C. on May 9 for another round of U.S.-China trade talks, coming a day later than scheduled.

China’s Ministry of Commerce confirmed via an announcement on its website on May 7: “Accepting the invitation from U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Politburo member Liu He, who is also vice premier and chief negotiator in the U.S.-China trade talks, will visit the United States on May 9 and 10 for the eleventh round of consultations with the U.S. delegation.”

This official announcement is different from previous ones where Liu was also named a special envoy of Chinese leader Xi Jinping. This change suggests that Liu would not be making the final decision while in Washington D.C.

Trump’s announcement on Sunday caused Chinese stocks to plummet.

The People’s Bank of China (PBoC), China’s central bank, quickly published a statement on May 6 that it would lower the required reserve ratio (RRR) of smaller rural banks to divert more liquidity to small, private companies, beginning on May 15.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority then announced on May 7 that the PBoC will issue a total of 20 billion yuan ($2.95 billion) of treasury bills out of Hong Kong from May 15 to May 17.

It also said 10 billion yuan ($1.48 billion) of the bills are for a three-month loan period, and the other 10 billion yuan are in one-year loans.

President Jair Bolsonaro is loosening Brazil's strict gun laws with a new decree, delivering on a campaign promise to make it easier for Brazilians to buy guns and ammunition.

The far right president signed the decree in a ceremony Tuesday night surrounded by supporting lawmakers who applauded and made finger-gun gestures with their hands.

The decree opens Brazil to guns and ammunition made outside the South American country, according to a summary of the decree. Gun owners can now buy between 1,000 and 5,000 rounds of ammunition per year depending on their license, up from 50 rounds. Lower-ranking military members can now carry guns after 10 years of service.

To own a gun in Brazil, citizens must pass a series of requirements including a psychological screening and a safety course.
